Secret Recipes

What did the goddess Demeter teach us about farming, and what did Athena teach us about the olive tree?

Through mythology, children explore the importance of Earth and the natural environment and transform into little gardeners.

The aim of the programme “Secret Recipes”, beyond discovering the magical world of nature that surrounds us, is to raise children’s awareness around nutrition and environmental protection.

To achieve this, we designed a series of activities that combine play and creative expression to keep children engaged and curious. These activities are grounded in the principles of constructivist learning, thoughtfully blending play, movement, and knowledge.

A representative example of the programme “Secret Recipes” in action, was within the initiative “Open Schools in the Neighborhood” (an initiative of the Directorate of Education & Sports of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, in collaboration with the Creativity Platform NGO, and with exclusive support from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation). Children from six primary schools in the city became little gardeners: they cultivated the land; played; listened to stories; created artworks; and decorated their own school garden. It was a learning experience that strengthened their bond with nature, healthy food habits, and environmental quality.
