Studies & Research

Research is the foundation of our work. Whether we are preparing a new project or evaluating the actions we implement, studying the subject and its context is crucial for designing meaningful and effective interventions.

Research ahead of every project

Before embarking on any project, we delve into its subject through primary and/or secondary research in order to gain an in-depth understanding of the needs, characteristics, and dynamics of each case. Our approach is grounded in exploration, collaboration with the local community, and interdisciplinary thinking -elements that help us design solutions tailored to each context and its challenges.

Evaluation & documentation

In all our projects, we integrate evaluation processes – either internally or as part of the Final Report required by funding bodies. Evaluation takes place on both quantitative and qualitative levels and allows us to learn through practice, assess our impact, and identify areas for improvement.

Specific research

Beyond the above, research can also be the core focus of a project, such as:

1. Water Management Practices in the Lasithi Plateau

In 2020, our study for the Municipality of Lasithi Plateau was inscribed in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage, under Article 12 of the UNESCO Convention. The research focused on water management practices, particularly the Lasithi windmills – a unique water-pumping mechanism that harnesses wind power to irrigate arable land. Closely linked to the region’s geomorphology and microclimate, the windmills represent technical know-how that is inextricably tied to local identity.

2. Rewildfires: Spreading resilience
As part of the “Rewildfires” project (2024), funded by iac Berlin, we participated in an international research process aimed at mapping the relationship between communities, fires, and landscapes. Through online and in-person meetings, as well as field research in Penteli, we sought to understand the local dynamics related to fire prevention, resilience, and restoration. The result of this effort was captured in the report: Case Study: Penteli.
