Culture for Kids

Born to be Archaeologist

  • Ideal for children aged 4-12 y.o. (Preschool & Primary School)

The educational programme Born to be Archaeologist aims to familiarise children with the profession of the archaeologist, which brings to life the richness of our cultural heritage in the most hands-on way. Beyond exploring the fascinating world of archaeology, the programme also seeks to raise awareness among students about the importance of cultural heritage.

A characteristic example of the programme’s implementation was the participation in the innovative Open Schools initiative by the Municipality of Athens, exclusively funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. School buildings were transformed into neighborhood meeting points and hosted cultural, educational and recreational activities. Within this framework, “Born to be Archaeologist” offered pupils, from 25 schools across the city, a hands-on excavation and creation experience, through 2-hours sessions that sparked children’s imagination and curiosity.

Secret Recipes

  • Ideal for preschoolers & students aged 4-9 y.o.

Through mythology, children explore the importance of Earth and the natural environment and transform into little gardeners. The aim of the programme “Secret Recipes”, beyond discovering the magical world of nature that surrounds us, is to raise children’s awareness around nutrition and environmental protection.

To achieve this, we designed a series of activities that combine play and creative expression to keep children engaged and curious. These activities are grounded in the principles of constructivist learning, thoughtfully blending play, movement, and knowledge.

A representative example of the programme “Secret Recipes” in action, was within the initiative “Open Schools in the Neighborhood” (an initiative of the Directorate of Education & Sports of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, in collaboration with the Creativity Platform NGO, and with exclusive support from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation). Children from six primary schools in the city became little gardeners: they cultivated the land; played; listened to stories; created artworks; and decorated their own school garden. It was a learning experience that strengthened their bond with nature, healthy food habits, and environmental quality.

LandART

  • Ideal for all school levels (pupils of 4-18 y.o.)

LandArt is a hands-on educational programme that allows children to use materials found in nature to create collective, temporary artworks. At the end of the activity, the artworks return to the natural environment that spawned their creation.

Through this creative and meaningful process, students are introduced to the concept of Land Art, and the young artists’ interaction with the land revises the relationship between people and nature, rejecting the traditional means of expression and promotion of art.

In 2018, the LandArt programme travelled to schools across the Pindus mountains, as part of the “Eco-Literacy” initiative by Apivita, in collaboration with the NGOs Agoni Grammi Gonimi and New Wrinkle. There, children were inspired by the natural surroundings and created unique artworks: a giant heart made of leaves and stones, small houses crafted from twigs and pine needles, butterflies formed by blossoms. On a lush green hill, they spelled out the phrase “Land Art” using white stones. With their imagination set free, they experienced the joy of creation in deep connection with nature.

Flying Circus

  • Ideal for preschool (4-6 y.o.) and primary school pupils (6-12 y.o.)

Children explore the fascinating world and history of the circus, through a participatory experience. The educational programme “Flying Circus” balances play and learning.

This experiential workshop gives children the opportunity to explore their body’s capabilities, while immersing themselves in the magical universe of the circus.

The historical journey begins in Minoan Crete and Ancient China and travels through the courts of the Middle Ages. Finally, it culminates in modern forms of the circus, which they will experience, in a safe environment, guided by trained athletes, acrobats, and educators. Children become little acrobats themselves, taking part in every stage of the circus tradition and experiencing freedom, joy, and creativity, in the most fun and original way.

Sustainable Mobility

  • Ideal for primary school pupils (6-12 y.o.)

In 2015, the United Nations (UN) unanimously approved the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the path that will lead us to a fairer, more peaceful world and a healthy planet that ensures prosperity for all. They are also both an invitation and a challenge for solidarity between generations. After all, there is no greater duty than to invest in the well-being of young people.

With a focus on Sustainable Mobility, this educational programme uses a specially designed floor game that centres on four of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda:

  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being
  • SDG 11: SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities
  • SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production
  • SDG 13: Climate action

Tales of the Owl

  • Ideal for students aged 4-9 y.o.

The children engage in philosophical discussion, while the wise owl guides them to understand the concepts of freedom, bravery, and happiness. Through arts and crafts, and a specially designed floor game, children will ponder and discover the value of these concepts in everyday habits, whether they practise them at home or school.

An educational programme, based on Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt’s book series, “Tales of the Owl”, in collaboration with Metaichmio publications.
